Tiny Houses and Living Off The Grid Will Require Specialized Pest Control

Johnny Bugs on Youtube

Let’s face it, today’s hipster trend of super-down-sized houses will present it’s share of pest problems for skilled exterminators to tackle. First, if living a transient lifestyle where you frequently move around to different places, you will exposing your tiny house to a variety of American pests. Without taking preventative pest control measures, many tiny house people will find their new tiny home becomes quite the welcome wagon. I wonder if millennials will circle them around like the old stage coaches when a pack of dangerous rats approaches? I digress; we always want to minimize indoor exposure to pesticides. That leaves few options in a place that has minimal breathing room, times of potentially poor or little ventilation, and a few water filled appliances nestled in under your utensils.

Rodent control will be the most important factor to address if traveling and staying near wooded areas. You will need to ensure your tiny home is not just-the-right-sized for Goldilocks to take her daily snooze. Rats and mice will find their way in through the base or come over onto the roof if nearby trees allow. Take the time to assess every place on the house that they can squeeze through. The smallest of holes or gaps can lead to additional guests rummaging through you pantry, which by the way, happens to be just a few feet from you right now.

Areas we typically treat in a regular home, are condensed into a tiny space that shares your immediate breathing room so specialized minimal risk products should be the only choice inside. Take the hot water heater for example, which is usually a hotbed for cockroach activity. These appliances normally reside in the corner of the garage or in a basement, where you don’t spend a lot of time. In a tiny house however, the water heater is hidden somewhere inside. Tiny home hot water heaters will create an oasis of Siesta Key like conditions. Heat and humidity will draw those large roaches or Palmetto Bugs directly into the party. This will undoubtedly create a conundrum for pest control service technicians who must choose products carefully that are labeled to be used indoors and adjacent to people all the time.

Outside treatments of tiny homes will also present a challenge. Many are quite all and have metal structures underneath which are not suitable for liquid sprays. Realistically, most pests will only be able to crawl up via supports in direct contact with the ground. Flying insects will continue to pose the normal threats. Right now I’m glad the mosquitoes can get lost on the other side of my house. In the tiny home, it will be easy to zero in on me. A thorough treatment around doors, windows, and plumbing/electrical penetrations will be needed. Additionally, insect bait placements into wall voids would be recommended.

Of course living in my large home has become passe. Maybe living small will make us feel like we are making a worthwhile contribution to society or saving the planet from ourselves. But I have to be honest that Living in a tiny house is a neat idea to me from the cost perspective. Being locked into a mortgage is not that appealing. For that reason, I would consider living small. Would you?

Sarasota Exterminator uses Apple Watch to Improve Pest Control Services

Stepping up to the front door I can hear the dog barking at my arrival. What was the dogs name? I know i wrote it down last time for the office to add to upcoming appointments. Wait a minute, with he flick of the wrist I can see the full appointment details which now includes “bruiser” as the friendly gigantic Mastiff.

As I walk into the home and make friendly conversation with Mrs. Customer, I get a gentle tap on the wrist and notice that my next appointment has sent me a message that they need to leave early. With another quick glance I can see how long it will take me to drive to their house so I pick up the treatment pace and keep the small talk to a minimum. While in the back of the house, I get yet another message from my wife that I need to pick up the kids from daycare later. The quick glance down provided me the important information without rudely checking my phone while I am supposed to be working. With haste, we move outside to begin cleaning cob-webs off the house. Cool, I just got a notification on my wrist that I have nearly met my calorie burn goal for the day and it’s still early. As I briskly walk around the house, I find numerous fire ant mounds in the yard that will need attention. Brushing out the garage and screened lanai (pool enclosure) has just tallied up another fifteen minutes of exercise. After filling my outside compressed air sprayer, I begin to treat for crawling pests like ants along the foundation, soffits / eaves, and around the doors and windows. Suddenly the phone starts ringing. I don’t want to pull it from my pocket while gloved but I may need to take the call. What do I do? I glance at my watch again and realize it’s a new client who has been playing phone tag with me for days. I hit the button on the watch and answer the call. What’s great is I don’t miss a step and get to hear their Sarasota Pest Control needs and ask them to call back to confirm the appointment time when I finish what I’m doing. With another quick glance, I can pin-point an arrival time on my calendar and the customer is thrilled I will be exterminating their ants in a few hours.

People ask me all the time “do you really need an Apple Watch?” My answer is no, not really, but it sure makes my life as the owner of a Sarasota Extermination Business much easier. Plus I find that I don’t feel the pressing need to keep pulling out my phone to check if people need me. I can alerts from all my incoming messages like Facebook, Twitter, Email, Text Messages, and more. I answer bug questions, look at pictures to provide insect identification for customers, and can set alarms for when I need to start wrapping things up when I am at Chatty Kathy’s house. It sure is nice to not have to be glued to the smartphone all day.

One of the early complaints I heard was battery life. I was skeptical it would last all day while using constantly at work, but to my surprise, it holds a charge all day. Most days I still have 25% battery left when I go to bed. It certainly meets my daily usage needs. In Florida, it also gets exposed to humidity and rain sometimes while outside for extended periods like spraying a yard for fire ants and takes a licking and keeps on ticking…

One area of the watch that I must brag on is the fitness tracking features. I find myself working hard to meet my daily fitness goals and have even started a running regimen. Would I have done this without and Apple Watch? Probabbly not, but it sure makes it easy to stay on track and focus on my personal goals. Juggling the duties of raising four children and running a full time business makes time precious. I have always needed to wear a watch to be able to use every minute of the day effectively. This time piece has taken this to an all new level of detail and may even help me find a few minutes for myself. Well, I can dream, can’t I?

How a Pest Control Icon from North Port FL Can Change an Industry for the Better

Johnny Bugs hates the way this industry has locked people into poor quality service and intends to change things. This local Mom & Pop North Port Pest Control Company has grown rapidly in the face of a depressed economy and soaring expenses related to poor national environmental policies. How is this sustainable? According to Johnny, “Our no-contract service is customer oriented, and we are breaking the long established industry norms with our no-pressure business model that includes using reduced-risk pest products and application methods. I believe that large international companies and all of their little local imitators are not providing what the people actually want, and are overcharging for poor quality. We offer the most cost effective solution to their problem.”

Mike H. from Venice says “I love that I can choose when I have the service completed and that you don’t just show up unannounced and surprise me while I’m in my pool, like my last pest control company always did.”

This North Port Pest Control Company Has Got the Goods

According to Johnny, the services are offered as one-time treatments with a limited warranty, or depending on your needs, you can choose an annual agreement that lowers the routine treatment prices and extends the warranty all year. You can even get substantial discounts if the year is paid up front. Customers are happy that they can live without ants, spiders, and cockroaches. “With the peace of mind we offer, they don’t have to worry about little critters crawling across them in the middle of the night.” says Johnny.

Sarasota Swarms with Ants Again

Photo Courtesy of David Mario Bazan Photography

It’s that time of season! With the relentless humidity and heavy rains bearing down on us, huge swarms of winged ants have been observed all throughout the counties of Manatee, Sarasota, and Port Charlotte. Phones have been ringing off the hook this week with people concerned that they may be witnessing massive termite swarms. Most cases are actually just carpenter ants, harmless in many ways, but a major nuisance when swarming in mass numbers. Especially if they are found inside. These swarms are just part of the normal cycle of life where ants go searching for greener pastures to set up nests and invade new structures. Although most are coming from nearby trees, a pest control treatment can aid in eliminating them from crawling into your home and setting up shop.

Despite their name, Carpenter Ants rarely do any damage other than just excavating previously damaged wood. Many times the infestation can be found in exterior door frames damaged by water being wicked-up the outer frame. Also, homeowners will see these ants in a bathroom or kitchen because they are nesting in the attic above and making their way down into your living space around high-hat light fixtures, bathroom fan vents, and plumbing protrusions. What should you do?

Ant Logo mediumBefore you reach for that can of smelly bug spray, call a professional company like Johnny Bugs, Inc. to check out your home to ensure a larger problem doesn’t exist. Contact sprays will kill a few workers, but leave the nest unaffected. Professional products placed in areas of foraging will be the best remedy. Call today to schedule your treatment or learn more at www.JohnnyBugs.com!
